Project Project presents Short Works

Project Project will present Short Works, a collection of short dances, on Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 at 7 p.m. at art6. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information e-mail Cherish Horton, director/founder, or call (804) 787-0255.

Each composition in Project Project's Short Works represents a dedication to the art of dance and a passion for life and community. The production consists of seven dances crafted by four talented choreographers from around the country. Shifting the focus from self to society and back again, the final product of all their hard work brings light and fresh air to the Richmond public.

Cherish Thomas Horton's A Strange Fascination with Balloons was inspired by the children she works with. Fed up with the daunting task of being a grown up, Horton plays with her dancers in a series of quirky twists, turns, tosses and rolls. Looking deeper, the dance embodies a fascination with the small things in life that make it so wonderful, like receiving the gift of a balloon as a child.

A New Breed of Happiness, also created by Horton, is a duet danced between two best friends. Although not alike in body, one being woman and one woman's best friend, the two are obvious kindred spirits as they display an uncanny ability to know one another through movement.

Horton's final piece, Use Me, was inspired by the club scene of the 1970's. Horton unfolds a playful and sensual scene through a bit of PG tongue in cheek humor. The trio is danced with gusto and womanly charm as hips shake, circle and groove.

Watendaji, which means energetic people in Swahili, is an intense group piece which integrates high energy flow, with bouts of sharp twitches and accents. Rosie Tkaczuk, the creator, was inspired by the intricate dynamics and distinct rhythms of the music of M.I.A. as well as a variety of ancient and modern dance forms. The fusion of African and contemporary dances bring old and new traditions to life.

Rachel S. Hunter's Effervescent Fountain of Humanity explores a sequence of movement evolving through repetition to represent the choreographer's personality.

Equivalence is a duet created by Hunter and inspired by the movements of repelling and rock-climbing.

Himmat Victoria Metz's Mindscore, the first piece in a trilogy work, searches the intimate realms of the human thought process and the polarization that keeps existence in balance. This solo envelops the audience with a glimpse into the inner world of the dancer as the choreographer asks these questions: What does thought sound like unmanifest? What color is thought? What do thoughts look like? What source fuels thinking? Mindscore establishes a personal look at one human experience through a choreographic lens using spoken word and sound to evaluate an internal polarity, a drive which exists inside us all.
