Alan Entin

Alan D. Entin, Ph.D., ABPP, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in marriage, family and relationships. He is a pioneer in the field of phototherapy, the use of photographs and albums in psychotherapy to understand family relationships, and his research is internationally known. He is frequently quoted in newspapers such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and magazines including Time, Self, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Child, Parenting, Working Mother, Family Circle, Womans World, Psychology Today, Marie Claire, Woman's Day, US and American Photographer.

Dr. Entin authored a number of articles in general interest and a catalogue essay for the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Va., on The Family as Subject: Photographs by Emmet Gowin and David Levinson. He addressed the Chrysler Museum on "The Family as Subject: Family Photo Albums as Icons of the Family." In conjunction with the exhibition "Imagining Families: Images and Voices" at the National African American Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. Entin delivered a lecture "Documenting Existence: The Importance of Family Photographs." In October, 2001 he spoke about "Phototherapy: Photographs as Icons of the Family and Their Uses in Psychotherapy" to the Society for Photographic Education conference in Hampton, Va. In connection with his exhibition "Where Magic Interferes With Reality," at James Madison University School of Art and Art History in Harrisonburg, Va., he delivered a lecture "What Family Photos Reveal About Your Family." He also wrote a review of Accidental Mysteries: Extraordinary Vernacular Photographs from the Collection of John and Teenuh Foster for the Folk Art Messenger, Journal of the Folk Art Society of America.

His photograph, Carrousel au Parc de la Villette I, was selected by the artist Philip Perlstein for the Peninsula Fine Arts Center's 2002 Biennial "Expect the Unexpected" and the recipient of the Virginia Society for the Photographic Arts Photography Award. It was also chosen as the front cover of the recently published book Handbook of Research Methods in Clinical Psychology by Michael Roberts, PhD, and Stephan Ilardi, PhD. Carrousel de la Parc de la Villette I and II were chosen by Juror Alfred Ward for the 2003 Hampton Bay Days Juried Art Show. The photograph, Carrousel au Parc de la Villette II, was selected by Marjorie B. Cohn, Carl A Weyerhaeuser Curator of Prints, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, Mass., for the 6th American Print Biennial competition for the Marsh Art Gallery, University of Richmond Museums.

His photograph Le penseur Rouge has been selected for the January 2006 cover of The American Psychologist. His photograph Transformations: Imaginary Naturescapes, BCA was selected as one of Your Best Shots of the week in Oct. 2007 by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

In 2001 he was selected as the Distinguished Psychologist of the Year by Psychologists in Independent Practice and in 2007 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Contributions to Media Psychology Award by the Division of Media Psychology, Divisions of the American Psychological Association. In 2008, he was selected to receive the Rosalee Weiss Award by the American Psychological Foundations for his contributions to psychology and the arts.
