David Freed

Born in Ohio, David Freed received his B.F.A. from Miami University and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa, where he studied under the legendary printmaker Mauricio Lasansky. Freed has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Grant for study in London. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Yugoslavia, West Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, and England, as well as in numerous exhibitions in the United States, including a major retrospective at the Anderson Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. His prints are also housed in fifteen American embassies throughout the world.

Beginning in 1966, Freed was a full-time professor of printmaking in the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. Now a VCU Professor Emeritus, Freed was juror of the 2007 High School Biennial Exhibition at art6. His series of etchings based on literary figures is a permanent installation at the main branch of the Richmond Public Library.

Works by David Freed are included in both "Books, Broadsides, et alia," and "International Prints from Virginia Collections," two of the CommandPrint shows at art6 in March 2008 in conjunction with the Southern Graphics Council Conference in Richmond.
